Gombey mask. A tradition that goes back to more than 200 years ago and blends Africa (their name means rhythm), Native Americans and Carribean Islands. They make and paint their own costumes and perform throughout the year on the streets of Bermuda. They loose themselves to percussions without ever showing their identity to recall the fact that in 1800 slaves weren't allowed to dance publicly.
Dopo aver lavorato il 25 aprile e il 1 maggio, la mia liberazione dei lavoratori l'ho celebrata con la giornata nazionale delle Bermuda.
Svegliarsi, salire su una barca e navigare fino a un'isola che è anche una riserva naturale e poi ad un reef sommerso, con grotte, sporgenze e canyon e un'acqua di un blu mai visto.
Guardare tutto quello che c'è lì sotto e sentirsi minuscoli, completamente in balia di questa enorme pozzanghera a cui lascio il permesso di farmi vomitare o emozionare mentre la maledico o ne chiedo sempre di più. E osservare le persone con cui condivido tutto questo.
E quindi Vagare per le strade di Hamilton a ritmo di musica, risate e sconosciuti per dare il benvenuto a quello che viene considerato il primo vero giorno d'estate.

After having worked on April 25 and May 1, I celebrated Bermuda national day instead.
I woke up, got on a boat and sailed to an island that is also a natural reserve and then to a series of breaker reefs, with caves, overhangs and canyons and water of the bluest possible color.
I observed everything there was to see and felt tiny, entirely at the mercy of this enormous puddle that is allowed to sicken or awe me while I swear at it or ask for ever more. And observed the people that I'm sharing all this with.
And then I wandered the streets of Hamilton fueled by music, laughters and strangers to welcome what is locally considered the first true day of summer.

La fine di una settimana spesa tra scienziati e artiste, a uscire di notte nell'oceano a campionare e vomitare, ad iniziare esperimenti di respirazione ascoltando e facendo ascoltare musica italiana alle 2 del mattino.
